“Breastfeeding:  
 A smart investment not only in the health of children, but also in the wealth of nations”
 “Breastfeeding is indeed a smart investment not only in the health of children, but also in the wealth of nations,” said UNICEF Representative in Iran, Dr Will Parks, in his speech in the launch ceremony to start the World Breastfeeding Week organized by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education at Tehran Medical University on 1st August 2017.In his speech, UNICEF Representative Dr Parks highlighted the economic significance of promoting breastfeeding and referred to a forthcoming UNICEF report stating that every US$1 invested in breastfeeding generates an estimated US$35 in economic returns for countries. “The benefits of breastfeeding for children and their mothers have the power to improve a country’s prosperity with lower health care costs and stronger, more able workforces,” added Dr Parks.UNICEF Representative in Iran talked about a number of potential barriers which could contribute to a mother’s decision for stopping breastfeeding early and said:   “Not having breastfeeding-friendly workplaces and employment opportunities is one such barrier.” He then referred to a study on breastfeeding which indicated that interventions such as maternity leave and workplace support had led to a 30 per cent increase in breastfeeding rates.

نماینده یونیسف در ایران در مراسم گرامیداشت روز جهانی تغذیه با شیر مادر:   تغذیه با شیر مادر یک سرمایه‌گذاری هوشمندانه است
شهروند| نماینده یونیسف در ایران، دکتر ویل پارکس، در سخنرانی خود در همایش بزرگداشت هفته جهانی تغذیه با شیر مادر که توسط وزارت بهداشت، درمان و آموزش پزشکی در دانشگاه علوم پزشکی تهران برگزار شد، گفت: «تغذیه با شیر مادر یک سرمایه‌گذاری هوشمندانه است، نه فقط در سلامت کودکان بلکه در ثروت کشورها.» نماینده یونیسف در ایران، دکتر پارکس، در سخنرانی خود در این همایش ضمن برجسته ساختن اهمیت اقتصادی ترویج تغذیه با شیر مادر، به گزارش جهانی امسال یونیسف در زمینه تغذیه با شیر مادر اشاره کرد؛ گزارشی که نشان می‌دهد هر یک دلاری که کشورها در ترویج تغذیه با شیر مادر سرمایه‌گذاری می‌کنند، 35دلار برگشت سرمایه در اقتصاد خواهد داشت. دکتر پارکس بیان کرد: «مزایای شیر مادر برای کودکان و مادران می‌تواند اقتصاد یک کشور را با کاهش هزینه‌های سلامت و درمان و ایجاد نیروهای کاری قوی و توانمند بهبود ببخشد.» نماینده یونیسف در ایران، همچنین درباره تعدادی از موانع بالقوه‌ای که ممکن است بر تصمیم‌گیری مادر برای قطع زودهنگام شیردهی به نوزادانشان کمک کند، صحبت کرد و گفت: «نبود محیط‌های کاری دوستدار شیر مادر و فرصت‌های شغلی برای این مادران یکی از این موانع است.» او سپس به مطالعه‌ای درباره تغذیه با شیر مادر اشاره کرد که نشان می‌دهد مداخلاتی همچون مرخصی زایمان و حمایت‌های محیط شغلی می‌تواند میزان تغذیه با شیر مادر را 30درصد  افزایش دهد.
